John EVELETH1815–
- Name
- John EVELETH
Birth | 1815 38 Note: John's application for land in 1852 stated he was 37 years old.
|
Birth of a brother | Sylvester EVELETH about 1815 |
Birth of a brother | William EVELETH between 1810 and 1820 |
Death of a father | Amariah EVELETH before 1826 (Age 11 years) Note: Based on fact that Amariah was not named, but his wife was, in the probate of his son Amariah and the fact that Amariah Srs sister stated that he was deceased in her 1830 will, Amariah was dead by 1830. In the 1826 Owen Society records in New Harmony IN it is clear that Amelia is the Head of Household; so Amariah must have died previously.
|
Education | 1826 (Age 11 years) |
Death of a brother | Ameriah EVELETH 1830 (Age 15 years) Note: Amariah Eveleth died in White County shortly after the family moved onto the land his mother Amelia bought from Seth Hull. Evidently Amariah did not own land but must have worked with his mother on her farm. He left an estate consisting of personal items and farm tools. The record of his probate is feint and difficult to read. It was found in the miscellaneous records of White Co and shows that the Eveleth, Withrow, Dagley, and Willis families were close.

Military | Illinois Militia 1832 (Age 17 years) |
Marriage | Maria WILLIS — View this family February 10, 1834 (Age 19 years) |
Death of a mother | Amelia GROSE? 1835 (Age 20 years) Note: Amelia deeded the land she bought from Seth Hull to her son John shortly before her death. The records from the White Co deed book show that Amelia died in the home of John Eveleth and Sylvester Eveleth verified that John had fulfilled his obligation to care for Amelia until she died, about Oct 1, 1835.
|
Property | 1835 (Age 20 years) Note: John received this land from his mother and was obligated to care for her until her death.

Marriage | Elizabeth MORRISON — View this family October 19, 1837 (Age 22 years) |
Death of a brother | William EVELETH 1840 (Age 25 years) Note: William (Willis) Eveleth left a small probate record. It confirms his relation to siblings and his wife Patsy GUILLAND.
|
Property | 1852 (Age 37 years) Note: John disappeared from White County before 1840 but he turned up in Madison County IL in 1852 when he applied for a Bounty Land Warrant from the US government, based on his service in the Black Hawk Wars of 1832. The application states he joined the militia in 1832 at Carmi, White County, IL. His original application is in the US Archives - Bounty Land Warrants. Evidently he sold the patent rights to a Mr James Hardy who took 40 acres of land in Crawford Co MO. And he also seems to have used his Black Hawk War Land Warrants in 1860 to obtain rights to 120 acres in Wisconsin which he sold to others. All of these documents refer to John Eveleth of Capt Powell's Co of Illinois Militia, Black Hawk War.

Note | I believe there were two John Eveleths living in White/Gallatin Counties in the 1830s. The younger John was the son of Amariah and Amelia; born about 1815, attended school in the Owen Community of New Harmony In in 1826, fought in the Blackhawk Wars in 1832, inherited his mother's land in 1834. It is not clear which marriages of John Eveleth - to Maria Willis or Elizabeth Morrison - relates to this John. The last known reference to him came in 1852 when he applied for Bounty Land in Western IL. |
