Note

From Clifford Gann, Irving, TX and Joy Gann Brown, Hillsborough, NC.

George served in the War of 1812. In the 3rd Tennessee Militia, he was in combat situations in Mobile Bay and New Orleans. In 1820 George and Polly were living in Hardin Co., Tn; in 1830 in Henderson Co. Years later, in answer to the call of Sam Houston for settlers to come to the Territory of Texas where land was free for those who desired to become permanent homesteaders, Polly, George, and their ten children joined a wagon train of 101 people, all of whom were reportedly related by blood or marriage, and arrived in Nacogdoches Territory in 1837. The records of the Nacogdoches County Board of Land Commissioners list George Washington Massengill and three of his sons, Isaac, Henry, and John, each being granted 1,280 acres of land by "Headright Certificates." The dates of issue extend from December 1837 to July 1845. In 1841, George and Polly moved to the Walker community (new Redland) where he and his son, John, built a combined sawmill-gristmill on the creek four miles north of Lufkin, Texas. Following the death of his second wife, George Massengill lived with his oldest son, John.
