Note

From Ray Gann, Rt 2, Box 105, Perkins, OK 74059.

Nancy received a Dawes commission allotment of approximately 90 acres located north of Sallisaw near Akins. How Nancy's allotment land was lost is a sad story. In 1918, Charlie and Nancy took out a mortgage on her land and borrowed 4900. It is believed that they needed the money to open a dry goods store in Sallisaw. One of the two photos of Charlie was taken in the store. After Nancy died, Charlie was apparently unable to not only repay the mortgage, but also unble to pay the taxes on the land for a period of several years. In 1931 the District Court for Sequoyah County ordered that the land be sold in order to satisfy a judgment against Charlie and Nancy's heirs, since by then she wasdeceased. Nancy's allotment land, her inheritance so to speak, wassold on the courthouse steps for $300.
