Note | From Dorretta Moore, R 4 B 305K, Blanchard, OK 73010-9407. 1860 Dallas Co., Mo census. In the spring of 1866, John and one of his sisters (Sally, it was thought) went in search of a cow which was missing. While searching for the cow, the children became tired and hot, and the boy laid down between two trees in the shade to rest. The distance between the trees was just right for the boy so that his head laid against one (using it as a pillow) and his feet just reached the other tree. While the children were resting there in the shade, John told his sister "when I die, I want to be buried right here." Not very long after that John became ill and died. He was buried under the tree where he had told his sister he wanted to be buried. Several different versions of the above "verbal history" has been told over the years, but this one has been the one repeated most often. The only difference in the stories were regarding the reason for the children being out in the fields. Some said they were on their way to town, others said they were searching for a cow, and others have said they were playing. |
