Note | From Phyllis Horsman, 1032 River Hills Circle, Chattanooga, TN 37415 9/5/96. Fate was a trustee at their Baptist church, and on 5 April 1929, he co-signed to purchase from John Parrott for $30 a tract of land deeded to the trustees of the First Foot Washing Baptist Church, Soddy. Fate was known for his charity and loved to help people. There was a little store at the end of his street that was run by a Mrs. Morgan from Wales. Fate and his family bought groceries and lunch food from her. Fate would hear of someone having a hard time and needing groceries, and he'd go to Mrs. Morgan's and buy groceries and take some of the meat he got from killing hogs and share with those needy people. After their children had gone to bed at night, Fate would put the groceries and meat in a sack, walk to the family's house, knock on the door then leave before they ever knew who was there. During the 1917 influenza epidemic, Fate went to the neighbor's homes to carry in their water and coal and put it on the porch for them, so they wouldn't have to be out in the weather. |
