"The History of Laclede Co., MO - 1979" - Lucy Gann Story as Told to Esther Griffin and Dorothy Calton. Lucy didn't get to go to school very much, probably 2 or 3 years at the most. Later her children helped her with her reading, writin and arithmetic. She reads and writes pretty good and can figure numbers too. Lucy took in washings for people and did the washing on a scrub board. She did housework for 10 cents an hour. One of her most steady jobs was keeping "Doc" Lindsay's office clean. She kept his office clean for 15 years. Lucy has a washing machine now but just doesn't like to use it and still washes on a wash board. The children wanted to get her a new stove but she said "No, I'm keeping my old wood cook stove." Lucy always took her children to the Baptist Church and made them sit by her. She tried to raise them right. She went to church until she was too old to go. Lucy tended a big garden and raised chickens to help feed her family. The boys didn't go to High School but her daughter went to Conway High School. Lucy has pieced lots of quilts, tacked quilts and quilted quilts. After she got too old to quilt, she still joins a group of quilting ladies occasionally. She said she could talk to them and she did. Lucy still has her quilting frames. She was raised a Republican but has voted both tickets. She remembers how bad she felt the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. She just couldn't believe it. Lucy has always loved cats and at times has had as many as 18. At present she has mama cats, tom cats, kittens and half-grown cats. They are in colors of black, yellow, grey and spotted numbering 12. Going on 89 years of age, Lucy has a sense of humor and is quite cheerful. Her dad, mother, sister, husband and two children are buried in Graceland Cemetery in Conway. She has put markers on her parents' graves but said she decided not to put one on her husband's. Her kids could do that after she was gone, for him and her both. Lucy has lived on the same street in Conway, MO for 66 years. A resident there for around 77 years. She has become a fixture in Conway.
