Note

George Elbert, sometimes known as George I Gann, was living with John Ferrel in Buchanan Co., MO at the time of the 1900 census. He was a laborer and listed as 14 years old. The St. Joe city directory later lists him as a R.R. employee. He is listed in the 1920 census, with a wife, Elizabeth, as a R. R. employee. In the 1940s, he was known to be a R.R. engineer living in St. Louis. After retiring, around 1964, he and Erma moved to Harlingen, TX where he died in 1972. Erma died at her daughter's in Virginia in 1986. The reason for George using the 'I' as his middle initial is unknown. He may have disliked his middle name, Elbert, or he may have been especially fond of his uncle George Isaac Gann. George was selected as train engineer for Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman in their presidential campaigns. He was employed 48 years by the Frisco Railways.
