Note | Tyler Gann was born with a partial club foot and his father fearing that with this handicap he would be unable to become a successful farmer sent him to school in Madison. It is unknown just how much formal education he received. One of his letters to his brother, Robert R. "Bob" Gann, written in 1890s has survived. It is written in a beautiful script or "hand" as it was called in those days. He is said to have "clerked" in a store in Madison; later working for the county at the courthouse in Wentworth. Still later, he worked in one of the government departments in Washington, D.C. The letter mentioned above was written from Washington describing his work, the city of Washington and some of the social activities. He contracted TB while working in Washington, D.C. Although he was engaged to be married, after learning that he had the fatal disease, he would not marry, and so died single. Lois Gann Perdue (his niece) says that he did not have a club foot but that he was accidently hit on the knee with a rock while sitting on his mother's lap. His leg never grew after that.
