Note

Miles enlisted with the Union's 6th Mounted Infantry at Chattanooga on Sept. 12, 1864. He died when he and two other men were swept over the Clift Dam at Soddy Creek.

In the Widow's Pension file there is an Affidavit of Jacob Barnes and A. H. Levi. of Soddy, Hamilton Co, TN, state "that claimants soldier husband Miles P. Penney was no doubt unavoidbly, unexpectedly and accidently drowned on the 25th day of December 1877 while crossing Clifts Mill dam in a bote that the creek was up and the draw & force of the water drawed him over the dam in spite of his efforts to avoid it & he drowned."
