John Gann taught school for some years and became the owner of a large plantation and many slaves. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Cobb County, moving into the district in 1834, two years after it had been laid out into townships. He soon became active in public affairs, his first office being that of Representative to the Georgia Assembly. He served two terms in the Lower House and in 1841 was elected State Senator, leaving the impress of his individuality upon the laws ofthe Commonwealth. For many years he was a member of the Georgia Militia, holding the rank of Major.
