Note | From Joy Gann Brown, 1301 Poplar Ln, Hillsborough, NC 27278. From Pension File: Francis was living in Cobb Co, GA when he filed his pension application. He served as a 2nd Lt. in Co. E, 1st Regt of GA Volunteers (Stovall's Brigade) and received pension monies as a "maimed" soldier from "gun shot wound in the immediate locality of the left hip joint" causing him to be permanently disabled to perform manual labor. Francis fought in the battle of Atlanta, GA where he was wounded on 22 Jul 1864. He was shot in left hip joint and the ball was so imbedded that surgeon could not remove it. The ball was finally cut out on 12 Dec 1876; however, his left leg was left weak and "the effects of the injury so effected his entire system" (according to surgeon) and the wound left Francis "unable to perform manual labor--surgeon considered him totally disabled. Francis signed his papers--he did not use an "x." |
