Note

From Ray Gann, Rt 2, Box 105, Perkins, OK 74059. Isaac's military record for the Mexican War indicates that he deserted from his unit in January of 1848, taking his government issue guns with him. Old issues of the Fort Smith Herald newspaper contain articles that state that Isaac returned to Indian Territory after his desertion from the army. In June of 1848, the newspaper reported that Isaac Gann and Creek Starr had killed a Cherokee woman near Evansville, Arkansas. The next weekly issue of the paper reported that a party of Cherokees had overtaken the outlaws and Isaac Gann was killed. In a related incident that occurred at the same time, Washington Starr was killed by two United States Deputy Marshals. Mary Ann McCoy Starr, Washington Starr's widow, later married Elias and Isaac's older brother, George Gann. Isaac was only five or six years old when his father died in the East; only 11 or 12 when he became an orphan upon the death of his mother on the Trail of Tears; and he was only about 20 years old when he was killed.
