"To His Excellency Geo. R. Gilmer, Governor of the State of Georgia, the petition of Thomas gann, humbly showeth That your petitioner is one of those persons who were sentenced, at the late term of the Superior Court in Gwinnett county, to a confinement of four years in the penitentiary of the state, for residing in the Cherokee nation within the chartered limits of the State of Georgia without having taken the oath required by a recent law of the state--that he was arrested in the month of March last--that between the time of his arrest & of his trial he removed his family from within the chartered limits of the state, without any intention of returning to reside within those limits, whatever might be the decision of the court--and your petitioner humbly desires that your Excellency's clemency may be extended to release him from the penalty of the law, agreeably to the power vested in your Excellency the the laws of the state --and your petitioner, as in duty bound, will every pray ?.
