Note

Served in the Civil War Co. I, 4th Regiment MS Calvary (Lula White Rebels) from Monroe Co and was taken prisoner May 1, 1862 at enemy pickets near Franklin, TN. Family tradition has it that John Gann was taken prisoner and though to have died. His horse and saddle were sold and the money was given to his wife. However, John came home later surprising them all. John S. Gann was one of the founders of Macedonia Methodist Church, Chickasaw Co., MS. According to family tradition, he could be heard for almost "a mile" when praying at the church. John S. and his wife are buried side by side under an old cedar tree in the Macedonia Cemetery, Chickasaw County, MS. Children and grandchildren are buried with them in this cemetery. From a family picture, one can see John S. Gann as a fairly large man with a receding hairline, high cheekbones, a powerful bearded face, and piercing eyes, quite a handsome man.

From Carolyn Gann Dufrene, Pinvevile, LA and Larry Evans Davis, Alta Loma, CA.
