Note

From Nina Graham, 806 S 3rd, Odessa, MO, 67076.

!With four older brothers fighting in the Civil War, little Harriet, young Oliver, Jr. and members of their family were held captive by Union forces in a make-shift jail in Lexington, MO, during the terrible days of the infamous "Order No. 11," in which all residents of several counties in western Missouri were ordered to evacuate the entire area. Familylore has it that Oliver, Jr. at age 4 sang church hymns as loud as he could and this helped in the family's escape. After their escape and traveling only at night to get to their farm some 20 miles to the south, father Oliver Gann found cows on deserted farms from which he got milk for baby Harriet. These stories were told by Oliver, jr. on his visit to Odessa in 1947 when he was 86 years old.
