Note

From Nina Graham, 806 S 3rd St, Odessa, MO 64076-1455 (816)633-4094 4/23/96.

!Elbert and Susan were married at the bride's home near Odessa. Listed on the 1880 Federal census, Sniabar, Lafayette Co., Missouri, 19-44-11-46: Burt 31 born Missouri, Susan 30 born Illinois, William 8, Belle 4 and Robert 1, all born in Missouri. Jeanie Marie Gann wrote down all the information she could remember about her grandparents: "The house where Susan and Elbert Sevier Gann lived was built before 1870 and it burned in 1900. My father, John Elmer Gann, was awakened by his sister, Florence Elizabeth Gann Brannan, and they immediately awakened the rest of the family. (Florence told many times how they carried out all the household goods they could.) The house was rebuilt as soon as possible almost like the first one was built on the north side of the house. It burned also, usually they were struck by lightening. The last barn to be built was put on the south side of the property. Marie would have been two years old when her grandfather died. Her grandmother lived 20 years by herself. When Marie was older she stayed with her some. One of the neighbors would send her daughter, Myrtle, over quite a bit to stay all night, especially when there was a storm. Elbert and Susan offered each child to get a start by giving them 20 acres and then he would sell then 20 acres for about $900." (I am sure he took a mortgage on the whole thing as he probably ended up getting the land all back.)
