Note

George Massengill and Hannah Gann married in Washington County on November 15, 1813. With Montgomery Stuart as his surety, George executed a Marriage Bond for his marriage to Hannah Gann on that date.

March 1816 term of Washington County, TN Court Hannah Massengale brings a case for divorce against her husband, George Massengale. Since Hannah was not yet twenty-one, she had to have an adult stand with her. "Hannah Massengale by Pleasant Wallace, her next friend, v. George Massengale."

The minutes from the March 1816 Term show that a subpoena had been issued and returned, a proclamation made, and the defendant was called but "came not." This was on the fourth day of court. On the ninth day of court, the case appeared again, indicating that the same thing happened. George was served again and failed to appear a second time. The court ordered that a subpoena be issued for George's appearance for the "next term of the Court to answer this petition on the first Monday of September next [1816]. Otherwise, the Court would proceed exparte. The Court also directed that this Order be published four times in the Rogersville Gazette, a newspaper of the time published in nearby Rogersville, Tennessee.

Several years later in 1822 George sued to recover the costs he had expended in fighting the divorce. The Court levied these costs against Hannah and her new husband, Moses Nelson. "fi fa" issued March 1822 at Jonesborough against Hannah Massengil now Nelson in favor of George Massengill. On Aug 12, 1822 in Jefferson County, TN J. Bradford, Sheriff, levied the fi fa on "an undivided moity or tract of land lying on the south side of french broad river on Mcguires creek adjoining the lands of Henry Parrott and others and after advertising according to law offered for sale at the courthouse door in Dandridge on the ?? and not sold for the want of bidders no other property found in my county" September 7, 1822. J. Bradford, Shff of Jefferson Cty. The costs which George was trying to recover totaled $12.90. This effort was unsuccessful, so George apparently never received the money.
