Obituary Topeka Capitol, 23 Oct 1919: Winfield, Oct 11, 1919--Joshua N. Gann, pioneer of Cowley County died at home last night Joshua and Sarah moved from Livingston County, Missouri to Morris County and Pottawatomie Counties, Kansas. They lived for a time in Topeka, Kansas after 1870. From there they moved to Longton, Elk County, Kansas and a year later moved to Winfield, Kansas. When the Civil War broke out, Joshua espoused the cause of the free state party and joined forces raised by Jim Lane, then a dashing fighter and brilliant orator. Survivors are second wife, seven children, 26 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren, all of whom lived in Winfield, Kansas in 1919, the time of his death.

From National Archives Pension File #492095: Joshua N. was a private in Company L, 11th Regiment, Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. It gives his date of death as Oct. 21, 1919.
