Note | From Craig Hubbard, 1847 Garnet St, Corona, CA 91710 12/28/95. Conway Weekly Record, Conway, MO--Thurs, Apr 29 1920: Mrs. Mary Gann of Dallas Co, met her death in Conway last Thursday afternoon, when she was struck and dragged several yards by Frisco freight train No. 31. Mrs. Gann had started to cross the tracks just in front of Ed Miller's Mill and on account of high wind did nothear the approaching train, which was running at a high rate of speed. She had not gained the track, but was near enough to be struck by the engine, and in some manner was caught in the machinery and dragged up the track to a point even with the ice house. The train was immediately stopped, and when the unfortunate woman was taken from the engine she was still alive, but in an unconscious condition, living until about 4 o'clock that afternoon. Mrs. Gann had returned on the No. 12 Thursday morning from El Campo, Texas, where she had spent the past four months visiting a daughter, and was waiting for relatives from Dallas County to arrive to take her home. She was about 64 years old and was the widow of John Gann who died 15 years ago. She had been a resident of Handley neighborhood all her life, she was an orphan, her father having been killed in the Civil War. Her maiden name was Mary Kirkland. She was married to John Gann in early womanhood and to them eleven children were born, all of whom are living. Those residing in the Handley neighborhood are Mrs. and Mrs. Thurman, Mrs. James Vincent, Mrs. Nellie Pinkney, Charlie, Ollie, and Elijah Gann. Those living elsewhere are Mrs. Ida Crenshaw, El Campo, TX; Mrs. Della Twombley, Fresno, CA; Wesley Gann, Phillipsburg; Edward Gann, IL; and W. A. Gann, Buffalo, MO. All but two of the children attended the funeral which was held at Handley Sunday afternoon. A large friends were present, thus showing the esteem in which she was held by everyone. Burial was in the Marlin Cemetery. |
