| Note | Peter McCabe Biography by his daughter Margaret McCabe in 1942 Peter McCabe was born in 1840 in Canada near Montreal[1] in the province of Ontario. At the age of 17, after teaching school there, he went with his brother James to Iowa in 1857[2]. They continued together until 1878 when they made a trip by covered wagon to file on land in Dakota territory when James returned to LaCrosse to be married. He, James, raised a family of children, later moved to North Dakota[3] . He is buried at Graceville, Minn in 1930. A half sister, Mary, who married a man by the name of Michael McCabe, and his youngest half sister Rose, who visited in So. Dakota in 1892 and who later married Chief of Police Richard Fadden, both lived in Larimore, No Dak. He visited these two sisters in 1892. In the early 1880s he received from Canada a letter edged in black telling of the death of his father Michael McCabe. His mother died when he was an infant. Her name may have been Mary or Rose. On Sept 18, 1859 he married Jane Hoey in Allamakee Co Iowa. Later moved to Houston Co Minn where he operated a general store in Brownsville, later moving to a farm near there along the Mississippi River and from there came to Brookings Co S. Dakota(1878). He was elected Register of Deeds(1890) of Brookings and moved to the city of Brookings where he opened a R.E.&L. office. He died 13 Sept 1896. The above was written Sept 1942 by Margaret McCABE (Mrs. Charles Mulholland), sent to Helen Blumhagen by John Stolp in 1959. In a note written to the side: "Daughter Rose says that Peter served as Register of Deeds, was a lawyer and ran for Governor of S Dakota in 1896." [1] Peter was actually born in Ops, Ontario, near the city of Lindsay. [2] It is a family myth that Peter went with his brother James to Iowa. James was too young and the 1861, 1871 census of Ops shows that young James was still in Canada with his father. Peter must have traveled west to be with another, older James McCabe and his family, who did move from Ops to Allamakee IA before 1856. It is not known whether James and Peter were close relatives. [3]James married in MN, lived in Lacrosse and moved to Montana before returning to MN where he died. |
