| Note | There is a dispute between descendents of Nathan concerning his parentage. Several pedigrees have been published for Nathan; some by descendents in Texas and others by Magees in Mississippi. As indicated by our genealogy publication, one groupclaims that Nathan's parents were Evan James Magee and Naomi SHORT; another claims that his father was Jonathan Magee Jr. Evan James and Jonathan Jr. were brothers and sons of an older Jonathan Magee and Rebecca JAMES of Georgia and South Carolina. The one thing that is agreed upon is that Nathan's grandparent's were the elder Jonathan Magee and Rebecca James. A most significant piece of evidence is that Nathan Magee, in 1841, was not appointed guardian of his younger siblings nor was he listed as an orphan. But in 1845 Nathan was added as a guardian to the remaining underaged children, along with his mother Naomi Miles. Nathan Magee's family moved from St. Tammany Parish in La to Mississippi when he was about 10. In Mississippi he married Caroline Mangum and they started a family in Mississippi. About 1850, Nathan, his brothers and other relatives moved west to Texas, settling in Newton, Polk and Trinity Counties north and east of Houston. Trinity County was a rough and somewhat lawless place. It was the county that eventually spawned the famous outlaw John Wesley Hardin whose family lived in the county seat Sumpter. The Magees prospered in Trinty county, living close to the communities of Friday and Pennington. Nathan was awarded a homestead by the state of Texas by farming unoccupied land for several years. Nathan and his wife are buried in the graveyard next to the small Ellis Prarie church near Friday, Texas - between Groveton and Crockett Texas. |
