Name | Evan's middle name could have been James but, just as likely, John. The probate of his father Jonathan indicates it could have been John. |
Death | Evans death was chronicled many years later in the Westville News Dated 27 October 1898, which described the incident as follows: .....\"For many years there were from two to five retail liquor saloons in Westville, around and about which many disturbances occurred, such as fistcuffs and affrays, with occasionally a shooting or cutting affair. One night, some 51 or 52 years ago, a row took place in one that stood on the corner where Drummond's store now stands. Evan Magee (father of Thomas and W.J. deceased) was cut with a knife from the effects of which he died. A man by the name of Revels was indicted for the murder, and when the case came up for trial, he applied for a change of venue and his case was moved to Smith Co., where he was convicted of manslaughter, this having occurred before there was a penitentiary in the state. He was branded for the crime. After Magee's death, Mr. Miles, father of S.J. Miles of Harrisville, married his widow Naomi Magee.\" |

Note | The following documents support the contention that Nathan Magee was the son of Evan James Magee, not the son of Evan's brother Jonathan Magee, as some have claimed. Pervis, and ?. (Samuel was second husband of widow Naomi Magee. ) b. Feb 26 1845: Evan J Magee minors. Nathan Magee looks after minors - Evaline Magee, Evan T magee, William t Magee. signed: Nathan Magee (X). Nathan probably took over guardianship of his younger siblings. c. May 22, 1848 Warren Magee, Nathan Magee, William Townsend are stated as guardians of Evan T Magee. d. Fourth Monday of may, 1848. Warren Magee appointed guardian of Evan, son of Evan J Magee. |
