Death

HOLDEN McGEE - REPUBLIC OF TEXAS Daughter Republic Texas Biography(Revised)

Holden McGee, son of Jonathan and Rebecca (James McGee, was born in Richmond County, Georgia on March 12, 1796. Around 1808 Jonathan McGee and his family were in Mississippi and moved to Louisiana, settling on the Pearl River. He and part of his family fought in the Battle of New Orleans. Holden McGee married Sarah Mary Howell in 1822 and they became the parents of nine children: George Washington (m. Frances Jane Townsend); John; Jonathan (m. Ophelia C. Frazier); Rebecca (m. Henry J. Townsend); James Purdee (m. Elizabeth L. Owens); Mary A. (m. William Henry Williams); William Lewis (m. Armacinda Letney); Joseph Evans; and Green Flournoy (m. Virginia Charlotte Letney). The McGee family came to Texas in 1839, settling first in Jasper County where Holden McGee received a 3rd Class Land Grant in Devember1839. Sometime later he moved into San Augustine County living near the Angelina River Bottom. McGee Bend Dam (now Sam Rayburn Reservoir) was named after him since the Dam was built on land owned by Holden McGee. Holden McGee died at the age of 102 on October 13, 1898 and was buried in the Lucas Cemetery, Broaddus, San Augustine County, Texas. The family story is that while plowing the garden, Holden unearthed a den of rattlesnakes, resulting in his death. On May 25, 1986 his grave was marked with a "Citizen of the Republic of Texas Medallion" by the Murray Hall Mantooth Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Sally Howell, his wife, died June 8, 1851 and is buried on the family homestead in Newton County, Texas. Posted 02 Aug 2010 by Nannette35 on ancestry.com.
