Jonas Short appeared in several tax lists from 1823 through 1825 but had disappeared from the tax rolls by 1829. Davis Short was also in the tax rolls during this time. Jonas sued a Jacob Lilley in late 1828. In 1829 Wiot Short and John Short appeared on the rolls and Davis Short continued on the rolls.

However, in 1831 Mary Ann Short and Jonas Short's marriage was dissolved by an act of the Mississippi Legislature; thus Jonas was alive in 1831.

Evans death was chronicled many years later in the Westville News Dated 27 October 1898, which described the incident as follows:

.....\"For many years there were from two to five retail liquor saloons in Westville, around and about which many disturbances occurred, such as fistcuffs and affrays, with occasionally a shooting or cutting affair. One night, some 51 or 52 years ago, a row took place in one that stood on the corner where Drummond's store now stands. Evan Magee (father of Thomas and W.J. deceased) was cut with a knife from the effects of which he died. A man by the name of Revels was indicted for the murder, and when the case came up for trial, he applied for a change of venue and his case was moved to Smith Co., where he was convicted of manslaughter, this having occurred before there was a penitentiary in the state. He was branded for the crime. After Magee's death, Mr. Miles, father of S.J. Miles of Harrisville, married his widow Naomi Magee.\"

My g.g.g.g.grandmother, Naomi (Short) Magee married a Samuel Miles as her 2nd husband. Her 1st husband, Evan James Magee was killed in 1836 in Simpson Co., MS. The Westville News ran an article on the history of Westville in 1898 that had the following:

"After Magee's death, Mr. Miles, father of S.J. Miles of Harrisville, married his widow Naomi Magee."

I don't have any dates on Samuel but Naomi's was b. abt. 1795 Ga. - d. 17 Aug. 1859 Simpson Co.
