William Hindsman was the son of (Peter) Israel Hindsman (1772-1851)& Mariah (d. 1859). He was born @ Wilkes Co., GA; his parents & siblings moved to Coweta Co., GA after 1826 & the "Cherokee Land Lottery" took place.He was among the earliest residents of Coweta Co. and was known by most as "Uncle Billy".He was married to Wife #1 Nancy Cotton (1810-1855)-she was mother to five children; wife #2 Apscilla Stroud was m/o one son.

"From the Newnan Herald: Uncle Billy Hindsman, one of the first settlers of this county was in town the other day and called in to pay for his Herald another year. Mr. Hindsman came to this county from Wilkes, eight miles above Washington, and moved to Coweta when Newnan was in the woods and before the Indians had left the county for the West. He is now well on towards his 80th year of age, is hale and hearty, was raised a farmer, plows every day during crop time, has gathered sixty-three crops, is not in debt a dime, and has twenty-three bales of cotton at home yet unsold, besides corn, meat and other supplies enough to spare. He has a second wife and a bright intelligent son, a lad of 10 years or 12 years of age by his wife, and judging by the pride of his boy, Uncle Billy no doubt thinks him a "chip" worthy of the "old block". For the information of old friends we will say that Mr. Hindsman lives nine miles south of Newnan and gets his mail at Luthersville, Meriwether Co., GA."

From "The Franklin News", Coweta Co. newspaper, 1886: "A notable pioneer and sterling citizen, William Hindsman died, aged 83." "The Franklin News", earlier article stated: "William Hindsman aged seventy-eight never bought corn or meat for his family as he always raised all that he needed."

William Hindsman was the first of his siblings to arrive @ Coweta Co. and before the "Cherokee Land Lottery" and the "Removal of the Cherokees". His wife's parents Weaver & Sarah "Sallie" Bennett Evans Cotton had land immediately adjacent to his. That land is now the site location of the "Cotton-Hindsman Cemetery" This land is located near "Grantville".
