Arrested For Poaching | In Jan 1781 Thomas Chuter of Frensham was arrested for poaching on the estate of Lord Stawall in the Holt Forest near Binstead Hamps. He was fined 20 pounds but was unable to pay; so the Justice sentenced him to 1 year in the jail in Winchester. In March the fine was paid and the Justice wrote a letter to the jailer stating that Thomas should be released. It is not clear if this is Thomas Chuter Sr or Jr. Copy order to the keeper of Winchester Gaol for the release of Thomas Chuter of Frensham, Surrey labourer 44M69/G3/591 1781 Convicted on 11 Jan 1781 on the oath of John Hammond of Binsted, forest keeper for theft of Lord Stawell's deer in Holt Forest, 17 Mar 1781 These documents are held at Hampshire Record Office. |
