Event | Samuel was an early settler on the Calfpasture River in Augusta Co. Unconfirmed claims on Internet state he was born about 1720 in Ireland. Settlers of the Calfpasture in Augusta County, Virginia: In 1744, an early settlement on 16,500 acres on the Calfpasture granted to James Patton and John Lewis was very closely associated with the James River and Roanoke settlements. The original settlers were Alexander Dunlap, William Jameson, Thomas Gilham, Robert Crockett, David Davis, Thomas Weems, Henry Gray, FRANCIS DONNALLY, Robert Gay, SAMUEL HODGE,.... Samuel Hodge lived on the Calfpasture river of Augusta County along with William HODGE who was evidently a relative of Samuel's. William may have been either father or brother to Samuel. The first constables on the Calfpasture were Robert Graham and William Hodge, appointed February 28, 1745. William was listed on the 19 Aug 1758 tax list with one tithable and was in the militia as of 4 Aug 1756. William bought 35 acres from Andrew FOSTER in 1760. William and Samuel both petitioned for a mill to be built on the Calfpasture River on Andrew Longridge's place. [p 441, Chalkey's Records of Augusta Co, Vol 1.] |
