Lucy SAUNDERSAge: 74 years18051880

Name
Lucy SAUNDERS
Given names
Lucy
Surname
SAUNDERS
Married name
Lucy Dunne
Birth July 1, 1805
Note: DOB taken from tombstone. I have assigned Lucy to be a daughter of John Saunders rather than Andrew Saunders because her husband Frank Dunn took over John Saunder's lease by 1839. Also Lucy was married in Hacketstown Parish which includes Rathbawn but not Knocknaboley where Andrew lived.

Note: I have placed Catherine as a daughter of John Saunders, not Andrew Saunders. It is certainly possible she was Andrew's daughter and not a sister to Lucy, but they appear in several records together. It is likely Lucy and Catherine were sisters who married Dunn brothers. Census records and Coolatin records indicate Catherine could have been born as early as 1808.

Note: This baptism record is difficult to read. The name could be Susan or perhaps Lusian. In any case it is definitely a record for a child of Francis and Lucy. What is really interesting is that Andrew Saunders was a sponsor. The only Andrew Saunders known were old Andrew Saunders of Knocknaboley who was a Protestant and James Saunders' son Andrew, who would have been 18. Since James Saunders was an active, practicing Church of Ireland member, it is likely that it was the younger. This might indicate that old Andrew Saunders had converted to Catholicism or that there was a third Andrew Saunders, perhaps a younger brother of Lucy.

Note

Francis Dunn and Lucy Saunders Dunn took over the John Saunders lease on Rathbawn by 1839. Thus she was likely daughter of John Saunders of Rathbawn and had several possible siblings including John Jr and Catherine Saunders (wife of Daniel Dunn of Knocknaboley.) Francis and Lucy were Roman Catholic and attended the Parish of Hacketstown before moving to Ontario Canada.

It is clear that there was a relationship between the Saunders of Rathbawn and Saunders of Knocknaboley. John Saunders' lease on Rathbawn was for the life of Andrew Saunders, son of James Saunders and grandson of Andrew Saunders of Knocknaboley. Baptism records in Killaveny show that Catherine Saunders and Andrew Saunders were sponsors for several of Francis & Lucy's children.

Both Lucy Dunn and Catherine Dunn's families left Wicklow for Whitby Ontario in the 1850s, which suggest they might have been sisters; however, it could be the close connection of their husbands that is reflected in the evident relationship.
