Census | Juan was listed with the survivors of the Pueblo Revolt in the muster of spaniards near El Paso in 1681. It's not clear he was in New Mexico before the Revolt in 1680. "Juan de Vargas Machuca, bachelor, eighteen years of age, passed muster before the señor governor and captain-general with his person, an harquebus, a shield, and three gentle horses, and without any other arms. He declared that he has neither arms nor horses belonging to his Majesty, and that he is in good health and wholly obedient in everything that he may be ordered to do in the royal service, as a vassal of his Majesty. He so swore before God and a cross, and he did not sign because of not knowing how." |
