Note | James Roberts. Birthplace: Rowan County, North Carolina 1) The prevailing theory is that his father was a John Roberts who was born in Brightsfield Town, Cork County, Ireland in 1730 and who then immigrated to the U.S. and married an Elizabeth Russell in 1755 in either Virginia or North Carolina. I have found land records as early as 1775 showing that a John Roberts had purchased land on the Arrarat River in North Carolina. This area encompasses the present day Surry County which was formed in 1771 from Rowan County. Twenty-four counties in North Carolina and all of Tennessee have been formed from the area that once was Rowan, whose western boundary was the Pacific Ocean. Thus, the children born to John and Elizabeth, including James, who were born before 1771 were born in Rowan County, North Carolina. Comment from familysearch.com. Unproved by me. |
