![]() | 100th Birthday February 10, 2018 (Age 100 years)Edna Gann McCabe Celebrates her 100th Birthday Local resident, Edna “Tootsie” Gann McCabe, celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends recently. Born February 9, 1918 in Porter, Oklahoma to Alta and Thomas Gann, her family moved to South Texas soon after she was born. The fifth child of nine, she grew up on her parents’ potato farm in the Rio Grande Valley, loving sports, dancing to big band era music, and working alongside her siblings. She remembers when her mother Alta talked about women gaining the right to vote in 1920, emphasizing that women should never miss an opportunity to vote—especially for women candidates - a message that has had a great impact throughout Edna’s life. Edna experienced the tumultuous events of the twentieth century through the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Four of her five brothers served in Europe and the Pacific in WWII. One son served in Viet Nam. And in the twenty-first century, two of her grandchildren served in Iraq. She married Vincent McCabe in 1939 and they raised nine children in the Rio Grande Valley, including Michael, Philip, Dennis, Tom, Donna, Terry, Ann, Peggy, and Jimmy. Vin was a longshoreman and an active member of the International Longshoreman’s Association. Edna supported Vin's career by actively participating in the ILA Ladies Auxilary which assisted ILA families in need and sponsored family socials. In addition, Edna and Vin made a home in Brownsville where all children, relatives and neighbors felt welcomed and accepted. Both Edna and Vin stressed the value of learning to their children such that each one earned a degree, and three earned PhD’s. Seven of her children became educators. Edna remains a favorite aunt and neighbor, always taking the time to make others feel appreciated. Grandmother to 13 and great-grandmother to 19, Edna finds great joy in being with children. She left Brownsville in 2001 after living there 52 years to make her home in San Marcos where five of her children have lived nearby. Moving into the house her children and grandchildren worked together to build for her, she has made a warm home and welcomes the chance to stay close to loved ones through regular phone calls and visits to her home. When Edna was asked to what she attributes her longevity, she replied, "life is worth living –and having experiences together, creating memories, makes it so.” |
