Mary Lou McCabe's Obituary

Mary Louise McCabe, lovingly known as Mary Lou, was born on July 3, 1942 in Rociada, New Mexico to Louis Martinez and Sally Manzanares Martinez. She departed this amazing life on January 4, 2025 in Austin, Texas leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and inspiration.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband Dennis McCabe, who was her partner in life, love, and learning. Her two sons, Brian and Tim McCabe, carry forward her values alongside their wives, Janice and Tricia. Mary Lou adored her five grandchildren, Brianna Aldridge, Conner, Nico, Claudia, and Bianca McCabe, all of Austin, Texas. Her grandchildren filled her heart with joy.

Mary Lou is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers; Robert, Larry and Dexter Martinez; survived by her youngest brother Ricky Martinez.

She loved and enjoyed her extended family; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces. Over the years, she cherished these interactions during family gatherings and holidays.

During her college years at New Mexico Highlands University, Mary Lou met the love of her life, Dennis, in a chemistry class. They married on September 21, 1963 in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Mary Lou's remarkable journey in education spanned more than four decades, during which she earned her Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. She dedicated her life to teaching students at all levels, from elementary school classrooms to college lecture halls.

Subsequently, Mary Lou served in the very unique leadership role as First Lady of Tarleton State University from 1992-2009. In this role, she influenced the importance of Tarleton's impact as an institution of higher learning.

As a highly successful and educated Latina, Mary Lou was a role model for many. She broke barriers and inspired others to pursue their dreams. Her warmth, wisdom, integrity and unwavering belief in the power of education touched countless lives.

A Memorial service will be held 11:00AM on Saturday January 18th at Harrell funeral homes of Austin.
