Birth

Michael's death certificate states his birth date was Aug 17, 1842, but the informant probably had the wrong year. Michael himself, in the 1900 census, stated he was born in 1841. The following letter from noted Monaghan researcher Theo McMahon has an entry for a Michael McCabe's baptism in Magheracloone (Aug 17) that supports our claim that Michael was from Magheracloone.

Dear Mr McCabe .... The Magheracloone registers of baptism commence, as you will be aware, in 1836. They are entered in English but and at times are quite difficult to read. I did index the baptisms up to 1850. These were all reasonably legible.

I only found a few entries that linked to a Francis McCabe as follows:

Baptised 14 April 1847 Patt McCabe son of Frank McCabe and Margaret McCabe of Magheracloone. The sponsors were Thomas Martin & Betty McCabe.

Baptised 25 January 1851 Francis McCabe son of Francis McCabe and Margaret Martin of Corlea. The sponsors were James Ward and Mary Martin.

Baptised 23 June 1856 John McCabe son of Francis McCabe and Margaret Martin, of Doagh. The sponsors were Michael McCran & Francis Lamb.

No other children are listed to the union but one entry may be incorrectly entered and reads as follows:

Baptised 17 August 1841 Michael McCabe son of Frank McCabe and Nelly(sic) McCabe of Magheracloone. The sponsors were Tom McGarvy and Biddy McCabe. (My note: This absolutely establishes the birthplace of Michael in Magheracloone since his death certificate in ND also has his birthday as 17 Aug . Second Note: Reading the parish records in the NLI, it is clear that the mother's name is NOT Nelly. It certainly could be Peggy but it is difficult to read. )

.......The Magheracloone headstones were never recorded or published.

Yours sincerely Theo McMahon

Homestead

Michael filed for a Timber Culture Homestead in 1884. As part of this type of homestead he was required to plant trees on his treeless 160 acres.

Census

The entry for Michael's family in the 1885 census is cryptic. The family is labeled All McCabe in Enumeration District 11, page 2. This entry is clearly for Michael McCabe because we know he was working on the Harriman Farm until his homestead application was granted. Michael's son Tom was born in 1864 and went to ND with his father in 1883 where they worked on the Harriman farm.

Event

Death

Death Announcement(May 30, 1913):

ARVILLA PIONEER HAS PASSED AWAY

M. McCabe Dies of Pneumonia After an Illiness of But a Week - Funeral Arrangements Not Complete.

M. McCabe, one of the pioneer residents of Arvilla, died yesterday afternoon of pneumonia after an illness of but a wek. Until Sunday, he appeared to be getting along well, but Sunday he suffered a relapse and steadily grew worse, despite medical atention. Mr. McCabe was one of the earliest and most highly respected residents of Arvilla. Owing to the fact that relatives from a distance are coming to attend, funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Burial

The plots where Harry, Annie and Gerald are listed as being buried are on a card under the name of Frank McCabe. The perpetual care was paid by Mrs. Dolores McCabe on Aug 5, 1949. Under the name of Frank McCabe is \"Rio Hondo, Texas 1917.

Shared note

Since Michael's grandfther came from Magheracloone Monaghan it is likely that he too was born in Magheracloone (near Carrickmacross) Monaghan and parish records confirm that.

Michael came by himself from Monaghan through Liverpool to NY. The ship John Bright was on the ocean for 6 weeks, and landed in New York Oct 10, 1859. He went on to Lindsay where, according to family lore, his grandfather McCabe, was already settled.

He lived with his grandfather Francis McCabe in Ops (Census 1861) and later moved with his parents to Laxton North of Lindsay when they arrived from Monaghan in 1861. He was living in Laxton wehn he married Mary McCABE in 1864, in the Catholic church in Lindsay.

The 1871 Census of Ontario lists Michael, (age 30, b Ontario(sic), Roman Catholic, Irish, Farmer, Subdist Ops) with his wife and children living close to her parents.

In the Summer of 1882, Michael and his son Tom came to Arvilla, Dakota Territory. He then took a claim about 18 miles east of New Rockford. In Grand Forks he also had bought a wagon, a team of oxen, a breaking plow, a tin stove, and lumber for a \"claim shanty\" . That fall he came back to Arvilla and worked on Dr. Harriman's farm for the harvest. Leaving his oldest son Tom behind with Mary's brother Pat in Minnesota, he returned to Lindsay and returned with his family to Dakota in the Spring of 1883, as he had rented the Harriman farm. Afterwards he applied for a homestead in Hegton Township near Arvilla.

Michael and his wife, Mary, brought 9 children with them from Lindsay Canada to Hegton Township close to Arvilla ND in 1883. Their youngest, Ben, was born in Arvilla. All the others were born in Ontario.

ND Naturalization records list a Michael McCabe, from Ireland, declaring on 4/15/1882 in GFC (vol D4 p257) and receiving citizenship 6/16/1890 (vol F23, pg215).

Headstone in Bellevue Cemetery says : \"Papa\" . Is buried with Tom(son), Mary(wife), Annie(daughter), Gerald(?) and 3 year old Harry (d:1917) Harry was Michael's grandson - son of Ben McCaBE.

A few years before he died Michael moved off the farm and lived in Arvilla with is daughter Annie. His sons - Francis, Patrick, and Ben took over farming his land in Hegton.

According to the THE PIONEER of Larimore, in an article written on June 5, 1913, \" The funeral of Michael McCabe took place here Monday morning from the Catholic church and was largely attended. Mr. McCabe died at Arvilla last Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The remains were interred in Bellevue Cemetery.\"
