Tom McCabes Genealogy 2022

Hello Arthur,

I checked my records and I have a Thomas Hoey who was born in Lindsay, Victoria, Canada in 25 Apr1845. Thomas had a brother Charles but he was born in 1835 in the same place in Canada. So this is most likely the Thomas that you found in Brownsville, MN.

Thomas had 8 siblings, the oldest being Jane Hoey McCabe, my gg grandmother. I will give you a bit of information that I know of this family, it was written years ago by a family member:

Jane Hoey, who was born in Canada in 1833, came to the states with her parents and brothers and sisters. Her parents came to Canada from Ireland around 1830. They started for Iowa in the 1850's where Jane had two aunts, Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Burke, whose son Frank was studying for the priesthood. On the way her parents died in the cholera epidemic of 1851. She herself also had the cholera, but having recovered, she at the age of 18 with her oldest brother Charles, 16, continued on with the rest of the family to Allamakee County, Iowa to make their home as had been planned. The oldest sister, Mary (later Mrs. Ferris) whose son Nicholas visited in Dakota in the 1880s, was married and living in Grand Rapids, MI. The others were Anna, 14 (later Mrs. McEvey), Thomas, 12, Catherine 1, (later Mrs. Enos) -mother of cousin Maude. Also a son, George, who visited in Dakota in 1888. John, 7, who was captain of a boat that hauled lumber and other freight up and down the St. Croix River. In 1902 he drowned in the St. Croix River near Stillwater, Minnesota, where his wife and six children still live, and James, 4 who with Charles, later lived in South Dakota................

Jane's parents were John Nicholas Hoey and Margaret Catherine Shields (of Scotch descent). This was written in 1942.

I have another article that say several of the Hoey descendants live at Stillwater, Minnesota. The article tells that Jane Hoey, who married Peter McCabe, lived in Lansing, Iowa. They moved from there to Brownsville, Minnesota, where Peter operated a merchandise store. The records of the Minnesota Historical Society show a Peter McCabe as serving on the school board there at that time. They had 5 children born at Brownville: their second child Charles Peter McCabe born in 1871 in Brownville was my paternal great grandfather. He died in Harlowton, Montana in 1940 which is where I and my father both live at the present time.

An amazing thing to me about Jane is that in 1878, at the age of 45, which was fairly old in those days, moved with her husband to Brookings County, South Dakota, making the trip with oxen and a covered wagon. They lived in a sod shanty on a farm for while, and later moved to the town of Brookings where Peter opened a real estate and law office. He was also registrar of deeds there at one time.
