Notes for Solomon Mangum from ancestry.com Posted 19 jul 2007 by GRNNYDONNA

On January 20, 1791, Solomon Mangum was listed as an orphan in Caswell County, North Carolina, at age 4, and was endentured to Martin Cooper, an uncle, as an apprentice.

The Mangum family left North Carolina between 1810-1812 and lived in St. Tammany's Parish, Louisiana, and in Columbia, Marion County, Mississippi, and finally settled at Cato, Rankin County, Mississippi.

Solomon was a ginwright by trade and lived alternately in Covington, Louisiana and Cato, Mississippi. He and wife Zillah Chapman Mangum are both buried in the Cato Cemetery, Rankin County, MS, four miles south of Highway 18, between Johns and White Oak, near the Cato Baptist Church.

Property

According to the Mortgage Book of St Tammany Parish, 1825-1831:

From: MANGUM, SOLOMON To: ROBERTSON, THOMAS B. DEED page 229

and

From: CHAPMAN, ZILLA To: DUNLAP (EXTR) MTGE page 200

Evidently Zilla had inherited land from her parents by that time.

Shared note

GOODSPEEDS abstracts page 404 says that Solomon was born in GA in 1787, Moved to Rankin Coo MS in 1812. Doesn't seem correct since his children were born in LA during the 1820s.
