Birth

Birth record verifies that Robert's father was Thomas, mother was Jane Braynes and his birthdate was Oct 20, 1842. One obituary in Missouri said his birth date was 15 June 1841, another said May 1, 1842. Exhaustive searches of records in England shows that the Robert Scott born on Oct 20, 1842 is the only possible birth record for a Robert Scott from Graveley in that time period, and the 1851 census in Gravely, England shows Robert to be 8 years old.

"GRAVELEY is a parish on the borders of Huntingdonshire, 3 miles east from Offord and Buckden station on the main line of the London and North Eastern railway, 6 south-east from Huntingdon, 7 south-west of St. Ives and 6 north-east from St. Neots, in the hundred of Papworth, petty sessional division of Caxton, union and county court district of St. Neots, rural deanery of St. Neots, archdeaconry of Huntingdon and diocese of Ely."

"The soil to a considerable depth is clayey; the subsoil is Oxford clay. The chief crops are wheat, peas, beans and barley. The area is 1,582 acres; the population in 1921 was 158." [Kelly's Directory - Cambridgeshire - 1929]

Immigration

By 1855 Robert's father Thomas had died and his older siblings were drifting to the United States. His oldest half sister Sarah Cook had moved to Ohio and was moving on to Council Bluffs IA. In Graveley Robert was probably living with his older half brother George Scott who decided to immigrate to the US in Dec 1855, taking Robert with him. The passenger list for the ship Emerald Isles which arrived Dec 31, 1855 from Liverpool, showed Robert Scott, age 12, arriving with George's family. In addition the 1851 census records from Graveley, which show Robert living with his father, had no son named Robert in George's family. Subsequent census records in Iowa also show no son Robert in George's family. So Robert Scott, age 12, in the passenger list is very likely George's half brother Robert.

A Description of the Ship Emerald Isle Ship: 1736 tons: 215' x 42' x 21' Built: 1853 by Trufant & Drummond at Bath, Maine

A famous clipper packet, the full-rigged Emerald Isle carried a total of 1280 Mormons in three voyages across the Atlantic Ocean.

The first passage began on 30 November 1855 at Liverpool with 350 Saints on board. Elder Philemon C. Merrill and his counselors, Elders Joseph France and Thomas B. H. Stenhouse, presided over the emigrant company. Captain George B. Cornish, a veteran mariner, commanded the vessel. In 1848 he was listed as master of the 895-ton ship Sheridan. The crossing was marked by some damage caused by high winds and heavy seas, the deaths of two children, and three marriages. After a relatively fast crossing of twenty-nine days the ship arrived on 29 December at New York harbor.
