Obituary for Ronnie Helmer: Ronnie Joe “RJ” Helmer, 68, of George West, Texas, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016, in San Antonio, Texas, after a long but courageous battle with pancreatitis.

Ronnie was born January 10, 1948, in Harlingen, Texas, to Joe Ed and Delpha Williams Helmer, of San Benito, Texas.

Ronnie is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sherry Bryce Helmer, of George West; two children, Shanna Mitchell and husband, Danny, of Stockdale, Texas, and Tate Helmer and wife, Heather, of Harlingen, Texas; and four grandchildren that he absolutely adored, Hagen Mitchell, Wells Mitchell, Bailey Helmer and Tatum Helmer.

He is also survived by his sister, Lola Hovda, of San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Richard Helmer.

Ronnie was raised in San Benito and was a member of the Los Fresnos High School graduating class of 1966.

He began his career in farming at age 9, driving a tractor for Ernest Long Farms. After working for the USDA, he began farming with his father as Joe Helmer and Son Farms. He later operated Ronnie Helmer Farms until moving to Clegg, Texas in 2001. His true passion was ranching, which started early in life and ended with his death.

Ronnie was a member of Brush Country Cowboy Church, TSCRA, NRA and AQHA. He served on the San Benito Irrigation District as a board director and officer, Cameron County Farm Service Administration committeeman, deacon and board member of First Christian Church of San Benito, and Cameron County Livestock Show roping committee chairman.

Ronnie’s memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 23, 11 a.m. at the Brush Country Cowboy Church in George West, Texas, with Pat Traxlor officiating.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert Brysch, Robert Duncan, Sterling Gray, Heath Harris, Mike Madden, Robert McDonald, John Minor, Eben Norman, Buck Rhyner, Dick Shimer, Billie Mack Simpson and Tracey Terry.
