The birth of Hannah (Goad) Bennett Ken Haas Date: April 22, 2006 at 06:28:59

... below is the record of the births of the children of John and Catherine/Katherine Goad in Richmond County, Virginia, North Farnam parish.

1 Nov 1723 - Joanna who married Valentine Sevier. 12 July 1726 - Elizabeth who married John Cock. 1 July 1729 - John, Jr. who married Margaret _____. 7 Apr 1732 - Hannah. second wife of William Bennett born 1703. 3 Mar 1734 - William who married Tabitha _____.

At this point, John and Catherine apparently left Richmond County. By at least 1754, they were in Bedford County, Virginia. I know of no record of where they were in the 1740s but John Sevier, son of Joanna, was born "near the present town of New Market" so her parents may have lived in that area, perhaps then Frederick County.

Marriage

Notes from Don Bennett's article, "Richard Bennett in Winston Dalton's Journal", March 2001.

After 6 Feb 1733, Mary passed and William Sr. remarried to Hannah Goad, daughter of John Goad, and had three more children: Thomas F., Stephen, and James. Another child, Benjamin, was a possible fourth son of William and Hannah. Of all these children, only Peter and James were mentioned in Winston Dalton's journal. William Sr. and his children later settled in Pittsylvania County on the south side of Pigg River. Early deeds identify William (Halifax DB 3-128, 1760), and Thomas (Halifax DB 6-323, 1767) as being in Halifax. A Richard and William Jr. also appeared in Halifax County records. Joseph was shown on early tax lists, but disappeared from the record and probably died or moved away. He may be the Joseph Bennett who appeared in Mecklenburg County, VA. Peter also acquired land in the area of Halifax (Halifax DB 5-80, 1764), but he lived in Bedford Co. In 1768 Peter sold the tract of land he purchased in 1764 to Hannah Dodson, sister of John Goad. (Pittsylvania DB 1- 424). In that 1768 deed, Peter was listed as "of Bedford Co." Peter died in 1778 in Bedford Co. leaving a will and naming among his children a son named Richard. From these and other records, it is evident that William Sr and his children settled in what is now Pittsylvania Co. except for Peter who lived in Bedford County
