Name
William? BRAINES
Given names
William?
Surname
BRAINES
Note: I've included William Braines as a brother of Jane Braines because he and Jane were married on the same day and same church in Graveley Cambridgeshire. There must have been a family connection. Jane married Thomas Scott and William married Elizabeth Christian on Jul 18, 1828. At that time William was a widower, a shepherd and a laborer. His first wife Rebecca Clarke (of Great Staughton Hunts) had been buried in Gravely a few weeks before William's marriage to Elizabeth, leaving him with a young daughter Ann Brain to raise. In 1830 William and Elizabeth had one child John baptized in Graveley after having moved to Stilton Huntingdonshire. William was a shepherd and probably moved with the seasons.
Birth about 1795 29 26
Note: According to his marriage record in 1824 to Rebecca Clarke, William was from Lowick Northamptonshire (near Islip). Subsequent census records always indicated he was from Northampstonshire and his last census said he was from Caistor North Hamps. (I believe it was Castor.) In the 1861 census William's (probable) brother John Brains also stated he was from Castor. No record of William's birth has been found yet.
