Event | Newspaper article celebrating their 50th anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. John Gaddis on August 8th passed the fiftieth milestone that marks their journey of married life. They have been residents of this city the past fifteen years. Mr. Gaddis was born at Gettysburg, Pa., March 26th, 1836. At an early age he served an apprenticeship in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a carpenter. He operated the first planing mill in Evansville Ind., during his early manhood. Mrs. Gaddis' maiden name was Priscilla Still. She was born in London, England, May 31, 1841. She came to this country at the age of 16 years. The couple was married at Millersburg, Ind., Aug. 8, 1861. Forty years ago Mr. Gaddis established a furniture factory in Olney, which he conducted for a time. He came to this city 39 years ago and established a hardwood saw mill. He sawed and donated the lumber used in constructing the present M. E. church building. Later he established a flour mill in connection with his saw mill on the site now occupied by the Fairfield ice plant. This mill was later burned. He went to Wayne City some 28 years ago and engaged in the saw milling business, and also established the flour mill there, later owned by Paul Hardy. He sawed and donated the hardwood lumber for the Wayne City Christian church. In 1896 he returned to Fairfield and built the flour mill now being operated by his son, B. N. Gaddis. By a former marriage Mr. Gaddis had one daughter, Mrs. A. S. Jessop, of Xenia. This couple has been the parents of six children: William, Robert and Bert N., in this city; Charles Gaddis, at Mt. Sterling, Ill., Jacob Gaddis, of Weatherford, Okla., and Mrs. M. C. Morris, of Xenia, Ill. There are 24 grand-children. Several children have died. The venerable couple live alone on Southern depot street in this city, and are enjoying fairly good health for people of their age. The golden wedding day was celebrated in a quiet sort of way, the couple receiving the congratulation of relatives and such friends as had been advised of the affair. That they may live to celebrate many more wedding anniversaries, is the wish of their many friends in which the PRESS joins heartily. Wayne County Illinois Press August 17, 1911 |
Religion | John and Priscilla Gaddis were members of the Christian Church. (Partially taken from a description written by Paul F Campbell in 1903.) Wayne City is close to Fairfield. CHRISTIAN CHURCH The Christian Church of Wayne City was organized by Elder J. S. Rose in June, 1889. The following were officers: J. K. Ashley and J. M. Lee Elders Joe Pixley, Jonathon Bratton, and John Gaddis, deacons; J. H. Gaddis, clerk. A block of three lots was bought from P. A. Gaddis and a building was commenced and finished in the summer of 1890. |

Note | Unknown Date, copied from Fairfield Paper Fairfield's First Automobile John Gaddis and son, Jacob Gaddis, enjoy the distinction of being the first of our citizens to invest in an automobile. It was bought in St. Louis, and was brought out by a representative of the house last week. Brief stops were made at Nashville, Centralia and Mt. Verson, and the machine exhibited to prospective buyers. It cost $725, and is the "run about" size and pattern. The Gaddis families enjoyed numerous spins Saturday and Sunday and Monday morning John and Jake Gaddis went to Salem, where they have a mill, returning Tuesday morning. Both trips were made in about five hours, which is almost as quickly as it can be made by rail, via Flora, including the stop of thirty minutes or more at the last named place which must be made in going by rail. The automobile trip could be made in faster time by the automobile were it not for the stops rendered necessary by frightened teams along the road. Many horses that are not afraid of trains or anything else, frighten badly at the sight of an automobile, and the slight chucking noise made by the gasoline motor, while other horses pay no attention to it. The Messrs. Gaddis will use all precaution possible, but it is well for our people to be a little on the guard until they see how their horses take to the "horseless"carriage. Many of those who have used the automobile think it is great sport, and it probably only remains for the manufacturers to get them down more reasonable figures to insure their general introduction. |
Note | Chapter 14 "History of County" Mills and Factories.---The manufacturing industries of Fairfield are few, and mostly unimportant, being confined chiefly to mills. Hardin Barnhill built the first mill in the town in a very early day. (...) Next came the Fairfield Mills. They were built by John Gaddis, about 1875-76, and were afterward burned. Then the present mills were built. After their completion, Gaddis sold, in the spring of 1883, to Benheimer, who has greatly improved them ... |
